Students must also make a financial contribution to long-term care insurance. The following principle applies: anyone who is insured in a statutory health insurance scheme automatically becomes a member of social long-term care insurance.

Students with private health insurance are obliged to pay their contribution to the respective private long-term care insurance fund.

Important for BAföG recipients: If they are liable to pay contributions to the long-term care insurance fund, they will receive a monthly subsidy towards the monthly long-term care insurance contribution from the BAföG office.
