First-year students must submit an insurance certificate issued by the health insurance companies to the respective university in order to enrol.

There are basically three possible forms of membership in a statutory health insurance fund for students:

Students are covered by their parents' statutory health insurance free of charge until they reach the age of 25.
However, certain income limits apply for this.

After the age of 25, the free family insurance ends and the student is obliged to pay their own insurance contributions. In principle, all enrolled students are compulsorily insured in the statutory health insurance scheme, which actually means that you can insure yourself at a relatively low rate.
Students who are subject to compulsory insurance are also required to pay their own contributions to long-term care insurance.

Students are covered by their parents' family insurance until their 25th birthday if their parents have statutory insurance. They do not have to pay their own contributions. After that, they have the option of student statutory health insurance at favorable insurance conditions. Health insurance is compulsory for students at state or state-recognized universities in Germany. The compulsory insurance also automatically applies to social long-term care insurance with own contributions.

Start and end of insurance
Health insurance begins with the semester, but at the earliest on the day of enrolment or re-registration. It always ends

  • one month after the end of the semester. This means that even if you exmatriculate before the end of the semester, your health insurance cover remains valid until the regular end of the semester.
  • generally at the end of the 14th semester or at the end of the semester in which the student turns 30.
  • if another, priority insurance comes into effect (e.g. as an employee).

Further information can be obtained from the relevant health insurance company in individual cases.

Contributions to student health insurance

The student health insurance consists of:
Basic amount + additional contribution + care insurance contribution

Here you will find further information on student health insurance (including contributions and additional contributions).

BAföG recipients who are liable to pay student health insurance contributions receive a monthly subsidy from the BAföG office. (BAföG subsidy for health insurance)

Exemption from compulsory insurance
This is only possible for students who have other health insurance (e.g. private). This is a final decision that cannot be revoked during the entire course of study. After graduation, you can only rejoin the statutory health insurance fund if you become subject to compulsory insurance as an employee.
